Schema Therapy
Schema therapy is a form of psychotherapy that combines ideas from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), attachment theory, psychodynamic concepts, and experiential techniques to help people change deeply rooted patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior—known as 'schemas.'
Schemas are broad, basic themes or patterns that often develop in childhood or adolescence based on early experiences, especially in relationships with caregivers. For example, someone may develop the schema of 'inadequacy' (feeling inherently flawed) or the schema of 'abandonment' (expecting people to leave them). These schemas influence how we see ourselves, interpret situations, and relate to others. In schema therapy, we explore these deeply rooted patterns together in a safe and supportive environment. You will learn to recognize the moments when a schema influences your reactions and practice new, healthier ways of responding. Techniques often include working with imagery to revisit and gently change painful memories, role-playing to practice new ways of connecting, and guided exercises that strengthen the more compassionate parts of yourself. This approach can be particularly helpful for individuals who have tried other therapies but still feel stuck in recurring struggles, especially in issues of relationships or self-esteem. Over time, schema therapy helps you not only understand yourself more deeply but also create new emotional experiences that replace old pain with a sense of connection and hope.
