Internal Family Systems

A form of emotion-based psychotherapy developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s. The core idea is that our mind is not a single unified thing but more like a small 'internal family' of different parts, each with its own perspective, feelings, and role. These parts are normal and natural, but sometimes they get stuck in extreme roles due to past experiences or traumas. Some parts protect us from danger, others carry the pain of the past, and some work hard to keep us functional in daily life. All these parts try to help in their own way, but sometimes their strategies cause stress or conflict within us. For example, a protective part may keep you distant in relationships to avoid pain, while another part longs for closeness.

In IFS therapy, we slow down and listen to each part with curiosity and compassion. Instead of trying to silence or fight your feelings, you get to know them and understand what they need. The therapy is guided by your 'Self,' which is the calm, compassionate, and wise core of who you are. Through gentle discussion, mindfulness, and imaginative work, we help burdened parts release old pain and find new, healthier roles. IFS can be particularly powerful for those who have experienced trauma, anxiety, depression, for those struggling with inner conflicts, or feeling disconnected from themselves. But many also use it for personal growth and self-understanding. The process often leads to greater inner harmony, self-acceptance, and emotional freedom.
